Chapter Seventeen

RAFE

The cold normally didn’t bother Rafe, but the bitter chill inside the jail cell seemed to seep into his bones. The thin T-shirt he wore provided little warmth. He jumped a few times on the spot to get his blood pumping. It had been hours since Ted had blindfolded him and brought him to a secluded building on the outskirts of town. With the help of two officers, they’d tossed Rafe into a damp jail cell and driven off into the night.

A cocktail of cow manure, mold, and dirt confirmed Rafe’s suspicions. He wasn’t in the city anymore. He jumped onto the iron bed, gripping the wall for support, and peered through the slit in the brick. It was dark outside and he could just make out a sliver of moon in the sky. Rafe sat down and ran his hands through his hair. While he was blessed with certain abilities, he didn’t have the power to blast through the thick, steel cell door. He wondered if Ted had found out who he really was, and banished him from town until he knew what to do with him.

An image of Aleida’s face popped into his head. Her ceremony hadn’t been completed, interrupted when Ted had barged into the warehouse. Her soul still had the mark, a minute piece lingering amidst the depths. With Rafe imprisoned in the middle of nowhere, Albinus had the opportunity to track her down and consume her. He didn’t have time to waste.

“Thinking about me, Azrael?”

Albinus appeared in the corner of the room, dressed in black, blending with the shadows. His blood-red eyes stood out like beacons. He stepped forward into the beam of light streaming through the slit in the wall. “Tell me, Azrael, does this make your fiftieth time in jail? It has to be a new world record.”

Rafe blew out a curse word and perched his hands on his hips. “What are you doing here?”

Albinus scanned the jail cell with a smirk. “Lovely place you have here, Azrael.” He sniffed the air. “Smells like a nineteenth century police station. I love how the deputy still has humor, despite everything.”

“Get the fuck out of here. I don’t want to listen to your gloating.”

“It’s ironic to see you in here when you wanted to throw me in the cage downstairs. I’m not the enemy, Rafe. I’ve already made you the offer. Work with me. We can become a powerful duo.”

“I rather rot in here than work with you. You want Aleida. I won’t allow that.”

“I heard about your little ceremony in the warehouse,” Albinus said, a darkness returning to his eyes. “I won’t deny I’m annoyed that you tried to remove her mark. I am entitled to her as much as you are.”

“She’s not a prize to be won!”

“She’s a soul to eat, a body to be had. What’s the difference, Azrael?” When Rafe didn’t answer, Albinus swung his arms around the cell. “Is this part of your master plan? Mmm? To be locked
